Amani has a unique style in delivering her Spoken Word/Poetry. Some of her pieces are a capella, others use musical accompaniment, but no matter what style she delivers, whether prose, or a speech, dub poetry, rapso, or a poetic song; she always leaves you captivated by her performance and wanting to hear more.
She started to perform her spoken word in Nova Scotia, but it was her move to Toronto in 2000, that helped her to further her poetic career. She became well known for her poetic rants on CBC’s Metro Morning, where she would take news and current affairs and turn them in to poetry, songs, or comedic rants. After years of performing in Canada and the United States she launched her first Spoken Word CD; AMANI, the Words, the Rhythm, the Music at Innis Town Hall in Toronto on September 22, 2007. Her CD received rave reviews, and gets regular airplay in both the Caribbean and the UK.
She was the featured poet at the Word Power International Black Literature Festival and Book Fair held at the Emirates Arsenal Stadium Conference Hall in London, England. She was also the headline performer at the Drum in Birmingham, England as part of the Nu Century Arts Live Box International Performance Series. “I have dreamed of taking my spoken word to the international stage for many years, and now my dreams are becoming a reality.” Two of her biggest dreams were fulfilled when she headlined at the Nuyorican Cafe in New York City in November of 2006, and when she was the International Feature at the Rapso Fest 2008 and 2009 Rhythm Poetry Festivals in Trinidad, West Indies. She is presently working on her second CD project entitled, A Pause for the Cause and plans to have her poetry published within the next few years.
Born in London, England, baptized in Trinidad, and growing up in Nova Scotia makes her style eclectic and her sound unique. She can hit you with a Dub Poetry Style one minute, sing you a Love Poem the next, and then just when you least expect it, a Hard Core Hip Hop sound will spew from her lips. She has a unique flavour, as she weaves in and out of speaking and singing her lyrics.
“To Amani I dedicate the letter "P" for her artistic Persona is Poised, Professional, Powerful and Poignant!”
