Indie Roots Rock
Vancouver - based The Matinee has emerged as one of the West Coast's finest song writing teams. Blending a passion for fine ale and finely crafted tunes, Matt Rose and Matt Layzell have combined to offer a unique spin on the roots-rock sound that is quickly attracting both national and international audiences. Together, the two Matts write songs that paint pictures of empty bottles and broken hearts, broken bottles and empty hearts... and maybe the odd unpaid speeding ticket. Now with 'Pukin' Pete Lemon on drums, Geoff Petrie on all things sugar & spice, Mike Young on bass, and brother Dave on keys... their collection of songs has come to life.
Matt Layzell has spent over seven years playing countless shows across the country as the lead singer of the much successful Vancouver rock group, Ten Ways From Sunday. Matt Rose has been playing guitar and writing songs for over a decade in the well known Vancouver bands Fera, The Matlocks, Jeff Johnson, TwinCity, and The Day Release Program. With their passion for writing, love of music, and their noted experience with past Vancouver bands, there is no question that The Matinee brings a unique and well-crafted sound to their audiences.
With their first self-titled full-length album, which was released in July 2007, their two most recent coast-to-coast tours, and the Songs "Mama" and "San Diego" charting on college/university radio, it is clear that The Matinee has struck a cord with national and international audiences. When you first witness this band, their songs tend to stick in your head, and you find yourself dancing and singing along. In addition, with their hard-nosed, do it yourself, and blue-collar work ethic, there is no doubt that The Matinee is a band you don’t want to miss.
“The alt-country-pop-squad "The Matinee" are making some honest footprints across Canada. Their self-titled 2007 release is a clean and crisp collection of songs to drink, dance and live with.” Darla Starvey, 92.7 CFFF FM
