The prophetic lyrics from the song Thirteen off of TV Heart Attack's self titled debut album were written three years before the accident that destroyed front man Jason Corbett's prized Mustang, and injured his then long-time girlfriend. The relationship did not survive, however the insurance money awarded from the crash helped to fund a recording he would later release under the moniker TV Heart Attack - an album featuring a song that would, against all odds, find its way into the mainstream.
Within a year of independently releasing their debut record, TV Heart Attack had garnered heavy rotation on FM radio (Hypnotic Eyes), toured the country several times over, performed in front of the camera on prime time network television shows (Whistler, Kaya), graced the stages of giant summer festivals (NXNE, Virgin), shared the bill with notable big name acts (Von Bondies, The Killers, 54-40), released an award winning music video (Bang Bang Bang), and had their songs featured on several major television and video game soundtracks - all while earning a reputation for their raw, anthemic live sets.
In early 2008, during the harshest winter Vancouver had seen in decades, TV Heart Attack began recording their next release: 'Lost in The Sway'. Having road-tested much of the material already, the band had one thing in mind heading into the studio - to blow away all expectations.
“There's a lot you gamble, choosing this crazy life. The choice is to continue and create, or you become the victim” explains Jason's long-time sidekick and TV Heart Attack guitar player, Art Guest. “It's about coming to terms with your choices later in life - looking back on the small victories, the elation, the highs, and the crashing lows. That, in a nutshell, is what TV Heart Attack means to me.”
Teaming up with Vancouver producer Ben Kaplan, the band spent the remainder of 2008 holed up at Garth Richardson's Farm Studios, putting in sessions whenever they could. The end product? “Enticing hooks, big choruses, a swell of guitars, a flurry of drums and little time wasted,” says CMJ Magazine. According to Jason, that's exactly what the band was going for...
“I'm always at a constant struggle with the sound. It's like, half of me is yearning for stripped down melodic, textured rock music with the guitars almost being an after thought - and the other half of me just wants to rock and roll. With 'Lost in the Sway', we went as big as possible, because I knew that I may never get another chance to do a record like this.”
